The Ultimate Diesel Build: Paul Cato's High Horsepower Race Truck
Paul Cato's D&J Precision Machine powered truck is a force to be reckoned with. Last winter, significant changes were made, including switching from stock axles to 9-inch axles and changing the gear ratio from 3.54 to 3.25. While these modifications are powerful, they've led to a situation where the truck has too much power and too tall of a gear for its tires. The team is now focused on dialing back the power to find a faster setup.
Paul is clearly having a blast with the truck, having achieved all his goals with this build, including winning Pro Street last year and hitting 4s for the first time. He's currently competing in Pro Truck and Super Diesel classes.
The Build
The truck's impressive setup includes a D&J built deck plate engine with rods, pistons, and a reworked Stage 3 head. It also features a GT55 98mm charger, Flux 478% dual 14s, a nitrous outlet system, Motech for control, ECU masters for outputs, a Turbo 400 with lockup, SCS transfer case, 9-inch axles, and RC comp bead locks. Paul notes that they frequently replace the charger due to overspeeding and contact, but it's an "absolute monster" for making power, especially with the use of nitrous. The current setup, particularly the 400 transmission and Motech system, has significantly improved consistency, allowing for better learning and adjustments. The truck also relies on a full range of Hot Shots fluids for optimal performance.
